Modern experimental studies have revealed that about 70 million people are engaged in substance abuse in India, out of which 17% are addicted to it. Illegal cultivation of plants from which these substances/drugs are made is a matter of serious concern. Generally people are not aware of the ill effects of such farming. The participation of Panchayati Raj Institutions and local drains is essentially required to stop illegal cultivation of the substance. Many agencies of the state as well as NGOs are also working in the field of drug trafficking and drug eradication, but there is a lack of coordination between them. Individual efforts of the agencies and various officials have also not yielded the expected results.
